HELIOTHERAPY...
THE POSITIVE EFFECTS OF THE SUN
WHAT IS HELIOTHERAPY?
Heliotherapy is the treatment of disease by
exposing the body to sunlight.
Decreases blood pressure
Lowers resting heart rate
Increases cardiac output
Lowers blood cholestrol
Increases sex hormones
Increases muscular strength |
Increases
resistance to infections
Increases oxygen capacity of blood
Increases tolerance to stress
Increases adrenaline in tissues
Increases energy and endurance |
DID YOU KNOW THAT?
Dermatologists use heliotherapy
for the treatment of acne, psoriasis and other skin disorders.
Heliotherapy is a chiropractic treatment
used for muscular stimulation and relaxation.
Heliotherapy is the only known cure
for Seasonal Affective Disorder, a cycle mood disorder caused by sun light
deprivation durring fall and winter months.
Currently, AIDS research clinics
use heliotherapy as an effective tool for boosting the body's immune system.
Heliotherapy used in hospital operating
rooms reduces the bacteria count by as much as 50%. As a result, patients
have been found to recover faster and have fewer post-operative infections.
Scientists at the Baylor Univeristy
Medical Center have successfully used heliotherapy to destroy the AIDS
virus and other infectious diseases and are developing heliotherapy to
decontaminate blood for transfusions.
Heliotherapy is practiced in Cancer
Research Institutes for successful DNA repair. Within hours of light treatments,
the canser cells begin to die, leaving the normal tissues unharmed. 70%
to 80% of the tumors treated responded positively after just one treatment.
Heliotherapy is used as an effective
tool for irradiating the blood of cancer patients.
The maternity wards of most major
hospitals use heliotherapy for the treatment of hyperbilrubinemia ( neonatal
jaundice), a condition found in over 60% of prematurely born infants.
While fully recognizing that long
term overexposure to the sun and burning can result in skin cancer, premature
aging and wrinkling in some cases, the sciences of heliotherapy supports
that the sun also offers many benefits.

Other Benefits
By law, indoor tanning facilities cannot say that indoor
tanning is safe or therapeutic. But, you deserve to hear all the scientific
research regarding ultraviolet light and the body. There’s more to this
issue than you’ve probably heard.
Most people falsely believe that totally eliminating regular
sun exposure eliminates the risk of damage from the sun. In reality, avoiding
regular sun exposure still leaves you susceptible to damage when you do
go outdoors. It may even make you more susceptible to damage.
You’ve heard about the increased risk of skin cancer associated
with ultraviolet light. In reality, the relationship isn’t that simple.
There are many forms of skin cancer, and the relationship with ultraviolet
light is a confusing issue.
Although research links skin cancer to ultraviolet light,
the exact relationship is unclear, and there are any other important studies
you need to consider:
It may be riskier for most people to avoid sunlight than
to tan moderately, according to new research.
Overall cancer rates are higher in sun-deprived areas of
the world and decrease significantly as one gets closer to the equator.
Malignant melanoma skin cancer is most common in people who
do not receive regular sun exposure and most frequently develops on parts
of the body that are not regularly exposed to sunlight.
Several studies suggest that many types of cancer—including
breast, colon, prostate and ovarian—are slowed or inhibited by increased
exposure to sunlight.
Sunlight is the body’s only natural and reliable source of
vitamin D. Studies suggest that this vitamin—linked to the prevention of
breast, colon, prostate and ovarian cancers—cannot be reliably supplemented
in our diet.
More than 138,000 Americans die each year from breast, colon,
ovarian and prostate cancers. Less than 2,200 die of non-melanoma skin
cancer.
A 1994 study shows that northern women have five times greater
risk of ovarian cancer than Southern women who receive more direct sun
exposure do.
Four-and-a-half billion years of ongoing research have proven
one thing conclusively: We would all be dead without sunlight—the source
of all life on our planet.
Some industries make billions of dollars each year by
scaring you out of the sun. These multi-billion-dollar corporations sell
sunscreens and their skin-care products and services by overstating the
effects of ultraviolet light. And they advertise heavily on television
and in your favorite magazines. We call them all the "sun-scare" coalition.
Skin cancer is an important issue to the dermatology
industry, because it represents the only subject that its lobbyists can
promote as critical or life threatening. Unfortunately, in their zeal to
scare consumers into their offices, dermatology lobbyists have exaggerated
research findings and misled the public about this topic.
For sunscreen manufacturers, the sunscare agenda is obvious:
the more afraid the Public is about the sun, the more products the manufacturers
sell. People buy sunscreen and cosmetics because they have to. They’ve
been told if they don’t, the result may be skin damage, skin cancer or
even death. Furthermore, a great deal of anti-tanning and skin cancer research
is funded by the pharmaceutical companies that profit by its negative outcome.
